Why a Name Change Is Needed
When a policyholder's legal name changes due to marriage, divorce, a court order, or other reasons, MetLife requires the policy to reflect the new identity. An accurate name on the policy ensures proper claim handling, correct billing, and compliance with state insurance regulations.

Gathering the Required Documents
MetLife typically asks for one of the following:
- Certified marriage certificate or divorce decree
- Court order confirming a name change
- Updated driver's license or state ID
- Passport copy if the name change is not yet recorded on a state ID
All documents must be in the policyholder's name and show the new legal name. Photocopies are usually acceptable, but some states may require notarized originals.
Submitting the Request
There are two main ways to submit the name change request:
- Online portal: Log in to the MetLife customer account, navigate to the "Policy Services" section, and upload the required documents under "Name Change."
- Customer service: Call 1-800-METLIFE (1-800-636-7345) and speak with a representative. They will guide you through the process and confirm receipt of your documents.
After submission, MetLife will review the documents, update the policy, and issue a new policy document with the corrected name. This can take 7–10 business days, depending on the volume of requests.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
• Missing or incomplete documents: Ensure all pages are legible and contain the required legal stamps.
• Using a provisional or temporary name: MetLife requires the final legal name to prevent future disputes.
• Not updating linked services: If you have automatic payments or an e‑policy, remember to update those systems so they reflect the new name.
Confirming the Update
Once the new policy is issued, verify the following:
- Policyholder name matches the updated legal name.
- Premium amount and payment schedule remain unchanged.
- All policy documents, including the summary card, are updated.
If any discrepancies appear, contact MetLife immediately to correct them before the next billing cycle.
When to Act Early
Processing delays can occur during peak periods, such as post‑holidays. If you anticipate a name change around a renewal date, submit the request at least 30 days in advance to avoid coverage gaps or billing errors.
