Prerequisites Before You Apply
1. Age & Citizenship: Must be at least 18 and a U.S. citizen or legal resident.2. Background Check: A clean criminal record is required; certain offenses disqualify applicants.3. Pre‑licensing Education: Complete the state‑approved 20‑hour course covering insurance fundamentals, ethics, and Pennsylvania law.
Exam Preparation and Scheduling
After completing coursework, you must pass the PA Life, Accident, and Health Exam. The exam is offered twice a year—January and July—through the Pennsylvania Department of Banking & Securities. Study guides, practice exams, and review courses are available from accredited providers. A passing score is 70% or higher.
Application Process
1. Submit the Application for License with the state, including:
- Personal information and employment history
- Proof of pre‑licensing education completion
- Exam score report
2. Pay the application fee: $35 for life, accident, and health combined. Additional fees apply for specialty endorsements.
3. Await approval: Processing typically takes 2–3 weeks. Once approved, you receive a provisional license.
Maintaining Your License
Licensed agents must:
- Complete 12 hours of continuing education each renewal cycle (every two years).
- Submit renewal application and fee of $75.
- Stay current with any changes to Pennsylvania insurance regulations.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
• Skipping the pre‑licensing course—this is non‑negotiable.• Failing to submit the exam score report—without it, the application stalls.• Not keeping the license active—expired licenses can lead to fines and loss of selling rights.
