Assess the Gap Before Choosing a Repair Method
Major gaps in a cement block foundation demand a methodical approach, not a one-size-fits-all patch. The width, depth, and whether the gap is actively moving dictate whether you need epoxy injection, hydraulic cement, or polyurethane foam.

Step 1: Clean and Prepare the Area
Use a wire brush to remove loose concrete, dust, and debris from the gap. For wide cracks, chisel out the edges slightly to create a mechanical key for the repair material. Blow out the cavity with compressed air and dampen it with water if using hydraulic cement, which requires moisture to cure properly.
Step 2: Select the Right Filler Material
Hydraulic cement expands slightly as it sets, making it ideal for dry, non-moving gaps up to several inches wide. For active or flexible cracks, a low-pressure polyurethane foam injection can accommodate slight movement without cracking the repair. Epoxy injections offer high structural strength and are best when the gap needs to bear load again.
Step 3: Inject or Pack the Repair Compound
For narrow-to-medium gaps, mix hydraulic cement to a thick paste and force it into the cavity with a tuckpointing trowel, overfilling slightly to allow for shrinkage. For wider voids, drill injection ports along the gap, seal the surface with epoxy, and pump the resin in from the lowest port upward. Polyurethane foam is injected similarly but expands to fill the entire cavity.
Step 4: Cure and Finish
Allow hydraulic cement to cure for at least 24 hours before exposing it to water. Epoxy typically hardens in a few hours but should be left undisturbed for a full day. Once cured, chisel or grind any protruding material flush with the block surface.
Prevent Future Gaps with Proper Drainage
Soil pressure and water are the primary drivers of foundation movement. Extend downspouts at least six feet from the house, grade soil away from the foundation, and inspect the block wall annually for new hairline cracks before they become major gaps.
