What Is MetLife Voluntary Accident?
MetLife's voluntary accident program is an optional benefit that employees can add to their base health coverage. It provides additional financial protection when an accident causes injury, loss of income, or medical expenses that exceed routine care limits.

Who Qualifies?
Eligibility depends on the employee's position, tenure, and payroll classification. Generally, full‑time staff who receive a salary or hourly wage, and who work at least 20 hours per week, can opt into the plan. Part‑time workers, temporary staff, and contractors are usually excluded. Check the company's benefits handbook or the HR portal for specific eligibility criteria.
How Does the Plan Work?
When an accident occurs, the employee files a claim through MetLife's online portal or by phone. If approved, the plan pays up to the policy limits for:
- Medical expenses not covered by primary insurance
- Temporary disability payments for days lost at work
- Rehabilitation or therapy costs
Benefits are subject to a deductible and an out‑of‑pocket maximum. The plan does not cover routine health care, elective procedures, or pre‑existing conditions that were not accident related.
Enrollment Process
Enrollment opens during the annual benefits period and may also be available during qualifying life events. Employees must:
- Log in to the HR benefits portal
- Navigate to the "Voluntary Benefits" section
- Select "MetLife Voluntary Accident" and complete the enrollment form
- Submit payment for the chosen coverage level
After enrollment, the policy becomes active at the start of the next calendar year unless enrolled during a qualifying event, in which case it starts immediately.
Important Considerations
Before enrolling, review:
- Coverage limits and how they align with your personal risk tolerance
- Deductible amounts and out‑of‑pocket maximums
- Any exclusions or waiting periods that may apply
