Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI)

SGLI is automatically available to all active National Guard and Reserve members while they are in a duty status that requires regular training or deployment. The basic coverage is $50,000, with the option to increase in $50,000 increments up to $400,000. Premiums are deducted from pay and are among the lowest rates in the private market because the government subsidizes a portion of the cost.

Eligibility and Enrollment

Eligibility begins the first day a guard member is in a duty status that includes training or a mobilization order. Enrollment is handled through the member's unit personnel office, which submits the paperwork to the Defense Manpower Data Center. If a member fails to enroll within the first 30 days of duty status, they can still apply later, but a late enrollment fee may apply.

Veterans' Group Life Insurance (VGLI)

When a guard member separates from service, they can convert SGLI to VGLI within one year and 120 days of discharge. VGLI provides the same coverage amounts as SGLI, but premiums increase with age and are no longer subsidized. The conversion is optional; members may also choose private life‑insurance policies if they prefer.

Additional Coverage Options

Guard members may purchase supplemental policies such as Service‑Connected Death Benefits or the Family Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (FSGLI) that extends coverage to spouses and dependent children. These add‑on options are voluntary and have separate premium structures.

Key Considerations

  • Coverage limits: $50,000–$400,000 under SGLI.
  • Cost: Very low premiums while in service; rates rise after conversion to VGLI.
  • Timing: Enroll early to avoid late‑fees; convert to VGLI promptly after discharge.
  • Supplemental options: FSGLI and other add‑ons can protect family members.
